Vancouver Sangat, a Sikh community charity group, has started a food service program for the needy in downtown Vancouver (Main & Hastings) since December of last year. The next food serve date will be on December 15.
The program not only has set an example by encouraging others
to get involved – promoting cultural diversity - , but also coincides with one
of Sikhism’s basic beliefs. “Sikhism teaches service to others. The primary
task in life should be to help the poor, needy, and oppressed. The Sikhs have a
long heritage of speaking out against injustice and for standing up for the
defenseless.”
As the Sikh population increases, I believe there will be more events and programs providing service to others in the future.
Thank you for the information on Vancouver Sangat. I was unaware of this organization, but I want to share another Sikh organization that serves free food in Vancouver. It is called "Guru Nanak's Free Kitchen" that walks on the path of the philosophies taught by the first Guru of Sikhs - Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji - to contribute to the practice of langar – the communal kitchen and seva – the selfless service of humanity.
